The reason the lock cylinder is on your door, to begin with, is to protect your car from theft. Issues with your door lock cylinders may arise when you feel that you need to put in lots of extra effort to turn the key in the lock. If this happens to you, you can respond in one of two ways, either by ignoring the problem and hoping it’ll just go away on its own or by tackling the matter and having the cylinder replaced. If you ignore the sticky situation (literally and figuratively!) the second half of the cylinder can also begin to get dislodged as you pull the key out, causing additional frustration.

Car Door Lock Replacements

As will all lock-related issues, your first line of defense should always be to spray the cylinder with Lubrication. If the above options don’t work for you, you will likely want to replace your door lock cylinder. As a general rule, door lock cylinder replacements should really only be done by an expert locksmith. If you want to attempt it on your own, you can certainly give it a shot by following these instructions.

Tools We Use to Repair Your Car Locks Include:

  • Screwdriver
  • Specialty thin pliers
  • Car Door lock replacement parts

Our Car Lock Replacement Process

  • First, our locksmith will open the door which houses the lock whose cylinder needs replacing. Next, our expert will push the ends of the “C-clip” which is found just behind the door handle and remove the window handle from the bar.
  • Next, the locksmith will want to unscrew the final screws from the tray of the door handle as well as the armrest, and then unscrew the door lock indicator.
  • After pushing the clips away by using a flat head screwdriver to remove the inside door panel, our locksmith will start at the bottom corners and make his or her way up to the top door panel.
  • Now, our expert will want to remove the clip of the bracket, which is the thing that is holding the lock cylinder in place, preventing it from moving about. For this step, he/she will want to use thin pliers. Pulling the lockout, if it doesn’t come out so smoothly, it can be helped along by pushing on it from within and then taking off the piece that connects the cylinder to the lock indicator stem. The three small tabs that attach to the small bracket part by the back of the lock can be pulled up with the help of the specialty pliers that our expert will have on hand.
  • At this point, the technician will want to insert the replacement door lock cylinder or replacement part that was purchased by placing the gasket on the cylinder that fits on the external part of the door. Now, the new cylinder will be put into place by pushing the small bracket on the cylinder that’ll hold the gasket in place. Our locksmith will then secure the entire lock assembly and align it with the slot of the cylinder.
  • Finally, the locksmith who is assisting you will replace the large bracket that helps hold the cylinder tight and onto the inside of the door. He or she will, of course, test the door lock cylinder by locking and unlocking it to ensure that it works well.
